The Drift Hd 170 1080P Helmet Camera is the direct successor to the X170, which is still available, by the way. Let's open the box and see what is there. The first thing that you see is the 'Quick Guide' in 7 languages. This might just indicate to you that Drift Innovations have been successful in selling their helmet cameras in several countries and therefore are a serious player in the growing operation camera market.

Like the X170 the Hd version comes with the molded, rubber case which feels good to the touch. Although it is not a genuine bullet cam it is nevertheless very light at 4.9 ounces.

It has a rotating lens like the Contour Hd and, uniquely amongst this type of camera, a 1.5" Lcd display thus allowing you to re-jig the settings after reviewing your shots. Also unique is the wrist-worn remote control, which works up to 16 feet, thus allowing you to mount your Hd 170 in more places than you would otherwise be able to and making it into a genuine wireless helmet cam.

There are only 2 minor criticisms on the Drift Innovation Hd 170 1080P. Firstly, it won't shoot at 60 feet per second. Additionally, if you affix an external microphone, the Hd 170 is no longer a waterproof helmet cam.

These minor points apart the Drift Hd 170 1080P produces great quality video and has the quality to take 5 megapixel still photo's, with digital zoom. I can confirm that these still photo's are exquisite quality as I have seen some. You will have to make a total of 4 clicks to switch from video to still mode so this may annoy a bit.

It is valuable these days for a Helmet Camera to use long-life batteries and, unlike old Drift cameras, the Hd 170 is designed with an 1110Al lithium-ion battery which allows you to shoot several times longer. Apparently Drift Innovations plan to introduce an optional 1700Al battery at some point.

The Drift Innovations Hd 170 1080P operation Camera has a night mode setting for use in poor light and this does make a valuable difference.

The Drift's in-built microphone captures relevant sounds Ok and keeps wind noise down pretty well. There is, however, an optional external microphone ready which would be beneficial for in-car or in-cockpit use or in high wind conditions.
